Autism Myth Busting

Two Thumbs Up is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia that provides youth and young adults with autism and other special needs social opportunities to connect with neuro-typical peers and each other. They connect with teens from all over the city and "pair" them with individuals on the autism spectrum. In that sense, every event they host is diverse and not an autism or special needs group. We all get the opportunity to share together and learn from each other.

Myth Busting Event: There are a multitude of misconceptions about autism and many reasons why neurotypical individuals fail to understand what autism is and how they can best connect with those on the spectrum. This event is meant to inspire and bridge the gap between the autistic and neurotypical world. In this event, teenagers from around the nation will submit questions to autistic self-advocates.

Then on April 11, Two Thumbs Up is hosting a live event where the questions and answers are presented by the autistics themselves and we will all gain a deeper understanding of neurodiversity, acceptance, inclusion and collaboration.

Volunteers are needed to:
1. Submit a question(s) to Two Thumbs Up related to Autism. Maybe you have heard something about what causes Autism, or how an autistic behaves that you aren't sure is true or not. This is the event to get all of those myths busted. Requirements: All questions must be submitted by (NEW DATE) March 21th. If your question is selected you Must Participate in the Zoom event on April 11, from 1:00 - 2:30 pm, and ask your question during the event. Details on where to email your question will be provided in the confirmation email.

2. Participate in the live event on April 11: where the questions and answers are presented by the autistics themselves and we will all gain a deeper understanding of neurodiversity, acceptance, inclusion and collaboration.

How to Register:
1. There are several dates on the calendar for this event to submit questions. Please only sign up for one day as this simply makes it easier to record your hours and to receive an email on how to submit your questions.
2. You can also register to participate in the April 11 Zoom event. You don't have to submit a question to participate in the Zoom event.

Pebble Tossers Nonprofit Expo 2021

On Sunday, April 18th, Pebble Tossers presents our 6th Ripple Run 5K/1K & Nonprofit Expo. Last year's inaugural Virtual Ripple Run + Nonprofit Expo was well received and will once again be a virtual event.

The Nonprofit Expo is a motivational, and FUN Virtual Service Event where children and families learn how to become active participants in our community. Through engaging at-home hands-on activities, volunteers are given exposure to new organizations so they can make a difference in our community. The Nonprofit Expo will be a Facebook Live event featuring 6 local nonprofits providing an overview of their organizations and at-home service projects ideas or educational activity related to their missions.

Each nonprofit will demonstrate a hands-on project that volunteers can do from home and then bring to the nonprofit organization or provide an educational activity. Below are the nonprofits participating and their activity:

InCommunity: Volunteers will learn how to start an eggshell seedling cup, which can then be transplanted into the gardens at one of InCommunity's residential homes or day program sites.

Covenant House- GA: Volunteers will participate in an educational activity, through which they can put themselves in the shoes of a young person facing homelessness before they arrive at Covenant House.

Two Thumbs Up: Q&A about Autism and introduction of the Penpal project.

Helping Mamas: Volunteers will learn how to make baby hygiene kits and others.

Open Hand Atlanta: Educational segment on the volunteer needs and how to participate.

Lifeline Animal Project: Volunteers can make Snuffle Mats for homeless pets.

How To Participate:
The Nonprofit Expo will take place on April 18 from 1:30 pm - 3:15. Volunteers can join us live via our Facebook Page. Volunteers will receive follow-up emails with details on the service projects for the Expo and on how to participate.

By registering via the Pebble Tossers Volunteer Management System - you are only registering to participate in the Nonprofit Expo NOT in the Ripple Run. Registration isn't required to participate in the Nonprofit Expo, but if you are a Pebble Tossers Member it is highly encouraged so you can record your hours and receive further instructions on how to participate.
